Cabot High School - Cabot School District
    Arkansas

To honor the important work of our employees, we recognize outstanding substitute teachers, paraeducators, and support staff through our annual Substitute Educator of the Year program.

Ms. Megan Mabry is a substitute teacher turned temporary secretary at the Cabot High School Student Success Center. She holds a bachelor's degree in Business Management.

Ms. Mabry is the winner of our 2024 Substitute Educator of the Year award in the support staff category. In this Q&A, she shares about her experiences and offers wisdom to new substitute educators.

Why did you decide to work in schools?

I was a full-time clerk for the U.S. Postal Service for ten years.  After this career, I wanted to have a better work-life schedule for my family.  I have three sons and I wanted to be involved more at their schools. I decided to try substitute teaching and then the school asked me if I wanted a long-term role in the counseling office.

What do you like most about working in schools?

In the Student Success Center, I'm able to communicate and interact with all students in the school. I am able to encourage students academically and become a positive influence daily. When a student struggles, I enjoying helping to build their self-confidence.

What advice would you give to new substitute educators?

Be a great asset in all areas for the school.  Give positive messages in all student interactions because this may be the only positive news they get that day. Show up for work every day on time. Follow the dress code!

What would you tell someone considering working in schools?

Give it a try, maybe one or two days a week. Try different grade levels to get a feel for what age of students you like to work with most. You can also check to see if the school has clerical or support staff position available too.

What motivates you to wake up and teach?

When I wake up, I'm thinking what can I do to make a difference at school that day by helping one student, two students, or three students. Maybe I’ll give a student information to help them throughout their day or maybe for the rest of their life! It could be a simple good morning or have a great day or you're doing a great job.
