Questions we get asked the most.

What are the requirements to become a substitute teacher or paraeducator?

A Kelly Education recruiter will walk you through the specific requirements, but typical requirements for Miami-Dade County Public Schools are as follows:

  • High school diploma required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age for elementary, middle school, and K8 centers.
  • Must be at least 19 years of age for high school.

Do I need and Education degree or teaching experience?

No prior teaching experience or education degree is required.

What is the pay rate?

Pay rates for substitute educators at Miami-Dade County Public Schools are as follows:

  • Substitute teacher (Bachelor's degree or higher): $117.72/day
  • Substitute teacher (non-degreed): $113.02/day
  • Substitute paraprofessional: $16.19/hour

* Substitute teachers for regular full-time ESE teachers, except Gifted, or who teach at an Alternative Education site, will be paid an additional $17.00/day.

Pay rates are determined by the school district.

How and when will I get paid?

Payday is weekly on Fridays. Direct deposit option is available.

First, we have plenty of daily substitute teaching opportunities to maximize your earning potential and provide you with steady work.  Second – once you are hired – you are eligible to earn $100 for every person you refer to us and begins working.  The more you refer, the more you earn!

What does the hiring process look like?

Here is a general idea of what you can expect:

  1. Submit the form on this web page. Let us know you’re interested and a Kelly Education recruiter will follow up with you.

  2. Fill out a prescreen form. This will be sent to you to confirm that a few minimum requirements are met.

  3. Join a virtual group interview. Learn more about our available positions in your area and see if a job in education is a good fit.

  4. Complete our online classroom management training. This free, required training will prepare you to be a confident in your new role.

  5. Pass a background check. Fingerprinting and background checks are completed to ensure a safe environment for students. 

  6. Attend our paid orientation. Learn about the policies and procedures for working with Kelly Education and M-DCPS.

  7. Start working!

What type of schedule/hours will I be required to work?

We pride ourselves on flexible work opportunities, so we do not require a regular hourly or daily commitment. However, given the critical need for substitute teachers and other staff, we encourage our employees to work at least two days a week, when possible.

How will I know when to work?

You will have real-time access to our web-based scheduling system that allows you to view available jobs and teacher absences. You can log in from a computer or smart phone to schedule yourself to work in the schools and classrooms that interest you.

What training and support will I receive?

Training is important to us and we want to make sure you feel confident and prepared. Prior to your first work assignment, you receive free online classroom management training to help you become a capable classroom leader. Free professional development courses are always available to you, covering a variety of topics that are relevant to the work you will be doing.  

All substitute educators -- regardless of position -- receive paid orientation that covers Kelly Education employment and district-specific policies and procedures.

Once you are hired, you will be connected with our dedicated Talent Care team who is there to help with essential day-to-day questions and provide guidance on how to engage with the school district staff and culture.
